FreeRice.com

I discovered the site FreeRice a few months ago. I’m in love and addicted. FreeRice is a website committed to ending hunger around the world. The people that created and run FreeRice are saints. While it is not a registered non-profit organization, it is operated entirely for free and makes no profit. All money raised by the site goes to the UN World Food Program to help feed the hungry.

Sponsors make all payments to the UN World Food Program directly. Here the lowdown. When you play the game, sponsor banners appear on the bottom of your screen. The money generated by these banners is then used to buy rice. So by playing, you generate the money that pays for the rice donated to hungry people all over the world.

FreeRice is a vocabulary game which really slaps you in the face with how uneducated you are. I felt like an idiot my first time playing, now I’m up to level 40 and slowly creeping up on level 60 (the equivalent of Einstein). You all know that first half hour you’re at work is devoted to email, news sites, and tabloids. Come one, admit it! So why not add yet another site to your routine. It is for a good cause after all. I’m quite sure TMZ isn’t donating to a third world country when you click on “Paris Hilton Drunk and Naked in Vegas” or “Jacko’s Wacko Meter Down.”
